Step 1: Apply for a VITAS (your entry visa)
Your sponsor starts the KITAS application online through the Directorate General of Immigration. This creates a Visa Izin Tinggal Terbatas (VITAS). VITAS is usually a single-entry visa that lets you enter Indonesia and convert to KITAS.
In some cases, you pick up the visa at an Indonesian embassy abroad. Many cases are now electronic, so check the latest on Indonesian immigration sites.
Keep copies of all approvals and receipts during the entire process.
You will interact with:
Directorate General of Immigration and your sponsor.
Sometimes, the immigration department at your Indonesian embassy offers a consular pickup.
Step 2: Enter Indonesia with your VITAS
Fly in and present your passport, VITAS, and approvals at the international airport. VITAS is tied to your purpose: work, family, investment, or retirement. Follow the same purpose after entry.
Step 3: Convert VITAS to ITAS and KITAS
After you arrive, your entry stamp usually activates your ITAS. Most people receive the e-ITAS/KITAS by email. After you receive the KITAS/ITAS email, go to the local immigration office only if the system asks you to come in or if biometrics are required.
Step 4: Provide supporting documents at conversion
Bring your passport, VITAS approval, and sponsor letters. Add extras based on your KITAS type:
Work KITAS: a job description that matches your business-related activities and your work permit or manpower approval.
Investor KITAS: the company deed of establishment, NIB, and proof that you are a shareholder or director.
Family KITAS:marriage certificate, birth certificate, sponsor’s ID, and proof of family ties.
Retirement KITAS: rental or ownership proof, local insurance, and funds.
Agencies you may see: the Indonesian ministry that issued business licenses, local civil registry if they ask for address proof, and the immigration department for file checks.
Step 5: Get your KITAS card and check the details
When ready, pick up or download your Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas. Many offices issue a physical card plus an e-ITAS.
Verify your name, passport number, sponsor, address, and validity dates. Fix errors right away at the immigration office.
Step 6: Do your post-approval tasks
If you work, make sure the employer keeps your valid work permit active for the whole stay.
If you invest, keep your company compliant and your local bank account active.
If you are on a family path: keep your civil records up to date as kitas holders often need the same data during renewals.
If you plan to travel, check your re-entry permit rules before leaving. Many KITAS types require it to exit and reenter.
Step 7: Renew on time and keep status clean
Track your end date and start renewal early, at least 30 days before the KITAS expires.
Late renewals can cause fines or gaps in your immigration status.
After some years on KITAS and if you meet the rules, you can apply for KITAP, which is a permanent stay permit.
